چکیده

The bentonite pellet-contained material (PCM) is a desired joint sealer for high-level radioactive waste repositories. During the operation of repository, however, PCM unsaturated most period. water retention capacity and permeability can thus directly affect buffer barrier seepage, nuclide migration, healing. Moreover, performance be strongly influenced by particle size pellets dry density. In this work, pressure plate method vapor equilibrium technique were both utilized to test soil–water characteristic curves (SWCCs) PCMs with varying sizes densities. hydraulic conductivity was then predicted combining SWCC model saturated conductivity. results showed that in low suction range (20–1150 kPa), density are anti-correlated content. high (4200–309,000 almost insensitive variation size. Gardner suitable describing PCM. addition, increases rise size, while it decreases as grows. Finally, influence mechanism further discussed based on scanning electron microscopy images pore distribution curves.

Determining the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of a compacted sand-bentonite mixture under constant volume and free-swell conditions

Highly compacted sand-bentonite mixtures are often considered as possible engineered barriers in deep high-level radioactive waste disposals. In-situ, the saturation of these barriers from their initially unsaturated state is a complex hydro-mechanical coupled process in which temperature effects also play a role. The key parameter of this process is the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of th...

Effective Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity

Steady-state and transient one-dimensional unsaturated flow in vertically stratified porous media are examined. Saturated hydraulic conductivity and the alpha parameter of the exponential hydraulic conductivity function were assumed to vary from soil layer to soil layer. The use of effective unsaturated hydraulic conductivity to compute matric potential in the soil profile is demonstrated. Resu...

The hydraulic conductivity of MatrigelTM

In this study, we measured the specific hydraulic conductivity (K) of MatrigelTM at 1% and 2% concentrations as a function of perfusion pressure (0 to 100 mmHg) and compared the results to predictions from two models: a fiber matrix model that predicted K of the gel based upon its composition, and a biphasic model that predicted changes in K caused by pressure induced compaction of the gels. Th...

Hydraulic conductivity of rice roots.

A pressure chamber and a root pressure probe technique have been used to measure hydraulic conductivities of rice roots (root Lp(r) per m(2) of root surface area). Young plants of two rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties (an upland variety, cv. Azucena and a lowland variety, cv. IR64) were grown for 31-40 d in 12 h days with 500 micromol m(-2) s(-1) PAR and day/night temperatures of 27 degrees C an...

Estimating Relative Hydraulic Conductivity from the Water Release Characteristic of a Shrinking Clay Soil

To understand the hydraulic properties of soils, accurate prediction of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is needed which is commonly derived from the soil water release characteristic. In fine-textured soils the modified Mualem-van Genuchten (MMVG) function has been used extensively to predict the change in relative conductivity with changes in matric potential, but this assumes that the soil...
